MONTGOMERY, Ala. – The regular season came to a close for the UWG women’s basketball team, and it ended on a high-note as the Wolves defeated Auburn-Montgomery 53-46 on the road in Gulf South Conference play.
The win sends the Wolves into the GSC Tournament as the fifth seed, and winners of their last two games as they are set to travel in the opening round on Super Tuesday.
Four Wolves finished in double-figures on Thursday night, led by a game-high 16 from senior Kayla Carter, who was 6-of-11 from the field with one three-pointer and also had three rebounds, three assists and a pait of steals.
Both teams struggled out of the gate, as the Wolves and Warhawks combined for just 15 points in the opening quarter. The UWG defense held the Nighthawks to just eight percent from the field over the first ten minutes of the contest
The Warhawks were able to cut into the lead in the second quarter as the offense began to find a rhythm. AUM got the deficit to just two, at 17-15, with over six minutes left in the game, but West Georgia would stretch that lead back to six points at the halftime break.
Jessica Brown got the UWG offense going early in the second half as she hit three-pointers on back to back possessions to stretch the advantage to a 10-point, 30-20 lead early in the third quarter. By the end of the third quarter, the Wolves had three scorers in double figures, led by A’Kia Harris, and after leading by as much as 15 in the period, the Warhawks closed the quarter with a big three-pointer to cut their deficit to 11 with one quarter remaining.
The Warhawks used back-to-back baskets to start the final period to cut the UWG lead to seven, but the Wolves would respond with their own back-to-back buckets, to make it a 43-34 lead, forcing an AUM timeout with 6:47 left. By the three-minute mark of the period, however, AUM had cut it back down to six points.
With 1:45 to play, AUM hit a clutch three-pointer that made it just a three-point UWG lead, but Kayla Carter calmly came down and hit a pair of free throws to stretch it back to a 48-43 lead. After a missed three-pointer by the Warhawks, again it was Kayla Carter who took a long pass from De’Ashia Jones and laid it in making it a seven point game with less than a minute left.
AUM wouldn’t go down without another fight as another three-pointer, this one with 29 seconds left, cut the lead down to four, forcing the Warhawks to foul D’Asia Cain. The senior would calmly knock both down to put the game away.
De’Ashia Jones and A’Kia Harris each had 11 while Jessica Brown chipped in with 10 to join Carter in double-figures. Jones finished with a double-double as she had 10 rebounds on the night.
The Wolves finished the regular season with a 16-11 overall record and a 12-8 mark in Gulf South Conference play.
West Georgia will open the Gulf South Conference Tournament on Tuesday evening in Cleveland, Tennessee, taking on Lee on the road. Tip-times and details for that game are still to be determined.
