CARROLLTON, Ga. - Through the first 10 games of the 2017-18 season, the West Georgia Wolves are 5-5, and heading into the first game of 2018, the Wolves stand at 1-3 in Gulf South Conference play. On Tuesday, UWG heads to Tennessee to take on the Union Bulldogs, followed by the Christian Brothers Buccaneers on Thursday in the northern Gulf South Conference swing.
Last Time Out
The West Georgia Wolves returned from the holiday break on Saturday, taking down the Livingstone Blue Bears in a non-conference warmup before returning to Gulf South Conference play. The Wolves outscored the Bears 14-7 in the overtime period to move to 5-5 on the year. Union has been off since December 18, when the Bulldogs lost by an 86-79 score to Christian Brothers. UU comes into Tuesday’s game with a 6-5 overall record and an 0-3 spot in league play.
Individuals in the Gulf South Conference
Junior guard Marquill Smith is fourth in the conference in scoring average thus far this season, putting up 20.1 points per game. He also has four double-doubles and is averaging 8.4 rebounds per game, which is good for fifth in the league. Should Paul Turner continue with his hot start, averaging 23.7 points per game, he will be among the top three players in the GSC.
Newcomers In The Lineup
The Wolves are still learning about themselves as a team, as three players have essentially joined the team in the past four games. Karlos Odum did not play until the Shorter game, and William Sides has missed the past three games. Paul Turner and LaPerion Perry each joiined the team within the last three games. All four of those players have scored in double-figures at least once this season.
Matchup To Watch
One of the biggest matchups of the game will be between the guards, especially with West Georgia on the defensive end. The two leading scorers for Union this season are Charlie Wilson and Pedro Da Silva, who are listed at 6-8 and 6-10. West Georgia’s top size on this year’s roster is Karlos Odum and Vinko Glavan, who are 6-7 and 6-8, respectively. The way the Wolves are able to deny entry passes into the post will play heavily into the UWG success in this game.
