CARROLLTON, Ga. – For the fourth time this season, a UWG freshman softball standout has garnered Gulf South Conference weekly honors as outfielder Sydney Smith was named the GSC’s Freshman of the Week on Tuesday by league officials.

Smith was a key part in the Wolves 2-1 series victory over Delta State last weekend, propelling West Georgia to their third straight GSC series win. The Ringgold native hit .600 at the plate with six hits in 10 at bats with three going for extra bases. Smith drove in five runs with two doubles and a home run. Timely-hitting was a key part of the freshman’s weekend as Smith went 3-for-4 with runners in scoring position and 5-for-5 in successfully advancing runners.

Couple those numbers with Smith’s outstanding defensive weekend in centerfield, and Smith was an easy candidate for Freshman of the Week, the fourth different freshman to receive that honor this season.  Katie Foote, Lexi Close, and Ashley Ellison have previously been named GSC Freshman of the Week.

West Georgia looks to continue their solid start as they travel to Shorter this weekend. Smith and company will take on the Hawks on Friday in a 5 p.m. single game and then play a doubleheader beginning at 1 p.m. on Saturday.
