Carrollton, GA – Seven University of West Georgia student-athletes were honored Tuesday by the Gulf South Conference. The UWG contingent was selected to the 2018 GSC Spring All-Academic Team.
Heading the West Georgia group was a trio of performers from the Wolves’ track-and-field program. Beyond that trio, one member each earned the recognition from UWG’s baseball, softball, men’s golf, and women’s golf teams.
UWG’s track team honorees includes a pair of student-athletes who have earned their diploma and competed this spring as graduate students: thrower Caitlin Teknipp and sprinter Emani Collins. Both had 4.0 grade point averages. Also, sophomore thrower Nya Moses was elected to the team. She is a Nursing major with a 3.58 GPA.
Collins was named Miss Wolf at last month’s Westpy Awards, and she was joined as All-Academic by Mister Wolf: baseball standout Cade Marlowe. The junior outfielder is majoring in Biology and carries a GPA of 3.84.
Also earning all-academic honors was softball outfielder Peyton Stallworth, a junior who carries a 3.91 GPA in Physical Education. A pair of golfers were also elected to the team; men’s golf star Sam Jones, a junior majoring in Finance with a GPA of 3.68, and Franziska Bremm, a junior Biology major with a GPA of 3.70.
The GSC All-Academic Team was selected in a vote of Sports Information Directors (SIDs) from each GSC Institution. Nominees to the team must have a cumulative collegiate grade point average (GPA) of at least 3.20, and they must have been a major on-field contributor to their respective teams.
The announcement of seven new members to the Academic All-GSC Team gives West Georgia a total of 12 student-athletes to earn the honor during the past academic year. Five members of the Wolves’ football program earned the honor following last season. Senior center Harley Vaughan, junior fullback Noah Brown, junior receiver K.J. Parmer, sophomore quarterback Willie Candler, and sophomore receiver John Hurst were voted to the team in January.
West Georgia’s seven-member All-Academic contingent is also a part of a large group of UWG student-athletes to qualify for the GSC Academic Honor Roll. To be eligible for the honor roll a student-athletes must carry an overall collegiate GPA of 3.0, or above, and have participated in competition during the recently completed season. This gives the West Georgia program a total of 120 honor roll student-athletes, a that is up from 109 honor roll performers a year ago, and only two short of the program’s all-time record set in the 2015-16 academic year.
Wolves have 62 student-athletes earn spot on GSC Honor Roll:
