CARROLLTON, Ga. – Year two of the Stacey Balaam era continues to inch closer, and the UWG Soccer team takes one step closer to the start of the 2018 season as 30 student-athletes report to campus on Wednesday and open preseason training on Friday.
The Wolves and Coach Balaam are coming off of an 8-9 record in 2017, and a third straight trip to the Gulf South Conference Tournament. This year’s edition of the Wolves features seven seniors, including the midfield combo of Julia Atenza and Katie Mitchell with Rachael Lane and Becky Brown headlining the defense for UWG.
West Georgia was picked to finish seventh in the annual GSC Preseason Coaches Poll that was released today. Four teams received first-place votes in that poll, with West Florida tabbed as the preseason favorite with six first-place votes, followed by Mississippi College with four, Lee with three, and West Alabama with one.
Practice begins on Friday with a two-hour session at 8 a.m. followed by another two-hour session at 4 p.m. Preseason camp will conclude on Tuesday with classes set to begin on August 15.
The season gets underway on August 31 as the Wolves take on Rollins College at 7 p.m. in Winter Park, Fla. UWG will stick around in Florida through Sunday when they take on Barry on a neutral pitch on Sunday at 11 a.m.
