CARROLLTON, Ga. – The Gulf South Conference released their Women’s Basketball Preseason Coaches’ Poll and the West Georgia Wolves were picked fifth by the league’s head coaches.
The Wolves, who return five seniors this season, were picked behind Lee, West Florida, Valdosta State, and the preseason favorite, Union.
Among the top returners for Scott Groninger, who is beginning his ninth season as UWG’s head coach, is Aysha Harris. The senior from Memphis, Tennessee begins the season just 198 points away from becoming the 11th 1,000-point scorer in UWG history.
Both Jessica Brown and A’Kia Harris have already received their degrees from UWG, and return for their final season of eligibility. A season ago, Brown was the team’s third-leading scorer, putting up 9.9 points per game. A’Kia Harris led the team in rebounding last season, averaging 6.9 boards per game. Harris has 536 career rebounds, which ranks her 10th in the UWG record book.
Juniors Edley Drawhorn and Ashley Lee were named UWG’s top newcomers in the league’s preseason release.
Excitement for the upcoming season gets ramped up Thursday night with Wolves Madness on 7 p.m. at The Coliseum. Free t-shirts and free pizza will be on hand for those in attendance, and the team will be introduced to the crowd.
The UWG women’s team officially begin practice on October 15, and then open the season with an exhibition against Division I opponent Alabama State on November 2 in Montgomery, Alabama. The official season opener is set for November 12 at Albany State.
