Carrollton, GA – Two UWG football standouts were honored Monday by the Gulf South Conference for their performances in Saturday’s 29-17 win over Delta State. Quarterback Willie Candler was named GSC Offensive Player of the Week, while receiver and return specialist LaPerion Perry captured GSC Freshman of the Week honors.

Candler posted spectacular numbers in winning his second league honor of the season. He completed 21-of-24 passes for 307 yards and two touchdowns vs. the Statesmen. His 87.5% completion percentage was the second highest single-game mark (minimum 15 attempts) in West Georgia history.

Perry was the recipient of both of Candler’s TD strikes vs. Delta State, including a throw-and-catch that covered 89 yards. The freshman from LaGrange, marking his first collegiate start at receiver, had a 183-yard total for the afternoon, the sixth-best single game performance ever for a West Georgia receiver. Also, he had 117 yards in punt and kickoff returns, giving him 300 all-purpose yards on the afternoon.

Saturday’s win pushed the Wolves’ record to 10-0 on the season for the first time since the 2000 campaign. It also set the stage for this Saturday’s showdown in South Georgia.

West Georgia, ranked third nationally, faces unbeaten (9-0) and fifth-ranked Valdosta State this Saturday with much on the line. Beyond the Peach Basket and state bragging rights, the 38th renewal of the in-state rivalry is for an undisputed Gulf South Conference title, and an almost certain top seed and first-round bye for the upcoming NCAA Division II Playoffs.

Kickoff time Saturday is 7 p.m. on Cleveland Field in Valdosta.
