SOUTHAVEN, Miss. – After the rain moved on, and the Wolves finally got to the golf course, the UWG men’s golf team put on a show, firing an opening round 280 to open up a six shot lead at the Buccaneer Spring Classic in Southaven, Mississippi.

The first day of the event was shortened to just 18 holes due to rain, so the Wolves will have 18 holes to wrap up the event tomorrow as they look to win their first event as a team this season.

Senior Sam Jones kept up his stellar play as he led the Wolves with a three-under 67 in the opening round, tying for the individual lead after 18 holes. Jones had two bogeys to go with five birdies on the day. Jones had three birdies and no bogeys on the back nine at North Creek Golf Club.

Lucas Mota was one shot behind Moore with a 71. Mota made three straight birdies on holes 11, 12, and 13, helping the freshman to 10th place after 18 holes.

Another freshman counted as the fourth score as Blake Kollin shot a 72 in the opening round. Kollin had three birdies on the day, and was plagued by a double bogey six on the par four ninth hole. Kollin begins the final round in a 13th place tie.

Dan Benson made three double bogeys on the day, but was able to use a few birdies to finish five over in the first round and is in 35th place individually.

The Wolves lead by six shots going into tomorrow’s final round. The Wolves re trailed by Rogers State in second place followed by a trio of Gulf South Conference schools. Tournament host Christian Brothers sits in third while Mississippi College and Delta State are tied for fourth.
