SOUTHAVEN, Miss. – Sam Jones stole the headlines with a school record 61 at the Buccaneer Spring Classic on Tuesday as the senior helped the Wolves to a one-stroke team victory at North Creek Golf Club in Southaven, Mississippi.

Jones’ 61 was part of a final round 282 from the Wolves, enough to hold off a second round charge from GSC rival Delta State who fired a 274 in Tuesday’s round. The 61 was nine-under par on the par-70 course and also sets a new individual single-round record in terms of score and relative to par. The previous record was a 64, shot by Jones as an eight-under round back in the fall, and Lucas Mota also shot a 64 in his first collegiate round, finishing seven-under in that round.

On Tuesday, Jones was bogey free and made seven birdies and one eagle. Jones won the event by seven shots over Jackson Singletary of Christian Brothers.

Additionally for the Wolves, freshman Lucas Mota shot a 69 to finish the event even par, good for a fourth place tie individually. Mota finished with two birdies and also eagled a hole on the day.

Rece Moore finished in a 19th place tie after a final round 76. It was a 76 for Blake Kollin as well, putting him in a 23rd place tie.

The final UWG golfer on the leaderboard is Dan Benson. The senior shot 78 on Tuesday to finish in a 47th place tie.

IT was the first team win of the season for the Wolves, and the first under second year head coach Todd Selders. The last UWG team win for the men’s squad came at the 2015 Matt Dyas Invitational.

The next tournament scheduled for Selders and the Wolves is March 25-26 at the Bearcat Invitational hosted by Lander in Greenwood, S.C.
