CARROLLTON, Ga. - A successful opening weekend for the 2019 UWG tennis program closed out on Sunday, as the Wolves won their first Gulf South Conference match of the year, beating Christian Brothers at the
Shelby Brown had a solid weekend to open her senior campaign, closing out the tournament with a straight-sets victory over Nelina Wooten. Brown won the first set 6-2, then the second 6-1. The Villa Rica native went 3-1 for the weekend at the No. 3 singles spot and combined with No. 2 doubles partner Meg Cummings for a 3-0 weekend. Brown and Cummings, both seniors, defeated CBU's Shay Pritchard and Wooten 7-5 on Sunday afternoon. In No. 4 singles, Cummings lost to Pritchard, falling 7-6 in the first set followed by a 6-3 win in the second and a 10-9 loss in the tiebreak.
Sophomore Bailey McCammon had a strong weekend as well in No. 5 singles, going 3-1 over a weekend that included a 6-1, 6-0 victory over Tia Pearson. McCammon and senior Jamie Bryant won their first match of the weekend on Sunday by default, but Bryant struggled through an injury throughout the weekend.
Freshman Sofia Soltis went 2-2 in No. 2 singles over the weekend, but she lost her match against CBU on Sunday, falling 6-4, 6-4. No.1 singles starter Timia Commodore won
West Georgia will be back in action on Tuesday afternoon with the 2019 home opener, taking on the Point University Skyhawks in non-conference tennis at Sunset Hills Country Club.
