UWG Student-Athletes Earn Conference Accolades

CARROLLTON, Ga. – Eight UWG student-athletes have earned top academic honors from the Gulf South Conference. West Georgia's performers were named Tuesday to 2017 FireSeeds Academic All-Gulf South Conference Team.

Academic All-GSC Teams are selected by a joint vote of Gulf South Conference Sports Information Directors and Faculty Athletic Representatives. Nominees must have an overall grade point average (GPA) of 3.20, or better, on a 4.0 scale for their entire academic career, and may not be a freshman or first semester transfer. The student-athletes must be a significant contributor to their squad. Other factors include leadership, community service, and extra curricular activities.

Three members of UWG's 2017 GSC Champion women's golf team earned all-academic distinction. Franziska Bremm, a sophomore from Colmberg, Germany, heads the contingent. A Pre-Biology major, Bremm boasts a GPA of 3.67. She is joined on the squad by teammates Taylor Sarratt, a graduate student from Statesboro with a 4.0 GPA in Public Administration, and Lola Uribe-Astoffi, a senior from Seville, Spain, with a 3.73 GPA while majoring in Economics.

For Bremm, the All-Academic selection is the cap for an impressive array of honors for the 2016-17 season. She previously was named a first team selection for the Women's Golf Coaches Association All-America Team. She was also a first team honoree for both the All-GSC and All-South Region Teams, and is a two-time Gulf South Conference Player of the Year.

UWG's remaining five all-academic honorees includes two each from the softball and women's track-and-field teams, one member of the Wolves' men's golf team.

Softball standout Sierra Stella was voted to the squad. The sophomore from Warner Robins earned All-GSC First Team, and All-South Region Second Team honors while carrying a 3.82 GPA in Pre-Early Childhood Education. Also honored from the Wolves' softball team was Katie Spinks, a junior from McDonough has a 3.85 GPA while majoring in Nursing.

Track-and-field standout Emani Collins earned all-academic honors for the second consecutive year. The junior from Ellenwood is an English major and boasts a GPA of 3.69. Also voted to the squad was Caitlin Teknipp, a junior from McDonough who carries a 3.88 GPA while majoring in Sport Management.

UWG's lone male student-athlete earning all-academic honor is golf standout Sam Jones. A sophomore from Hawera, Taranaki, New Zealand, Jones is a Pre-Finance major with a 3.67 GPA.

A total of 11 UWG student-athletes earned GSC All-Academic honors for the 2016-17 school years. In January, football standouts Harley Vaughan, Noah Brown, and K.J. Parmer were named to the Fall All-Academic Team.

Beyond the All-Academic honorees, a total of 62 student-athletes from UWG's spring sports teams achieved membership on the GSC Academic Honor Roll. Qualification for the GSC Honor Roll is automatic for student-athletes who saw action during the season and hold a GPA of 3.00, or above. For the academic year, UWG had a total of 109 student-athletes qualify for the conference honor roll.
