Another veteran presence on the UWG defensive coaching staff this fall is Rickey Hunley. The veteran mentor returns to UWG for a third season as linebacker coach. Also, Hunley this season adds the job of special teams coordinator to his list of duties
Hunley has tutored a trio of All-GSC linebackers during his first two seasons at UWG. Gabe Freeman was a two-time all-conference performer, Chris Harthone earned All-GSC honors a year ago, as did Marion Chapman following the 2015 season.
That trio was instrumental in West Georgia’s defensive success the past two seasons. UWG has led the GSC in total defense each of the past two seasons.
Hunley came to West Georgia with an impressive coaching background. Prior joining the Wolves, he spent four seasons in multiple capacities at Southwest Baptist (Mo.) University. He coached the secondary, coordinated the special teams and served as the Bearcats’ recruiting coordinator.
Before that, Hunley was on the coaching staff at Lindenwood (Mo.) as they made the transition to NCAA Division II and the challenging MIAA Conference.
Hunley earlier served on the coaching staffs at Iowa State, and his alma mater, Drake University. Before that, he also coached at the high school level in both Missouri and Iowa.
Hunley received many honors for his on-field prowess at Drake. He was a four-year letterman and 2003 team captain. Also, Hunley was a part of the Bulldogs’ 2000 PFL Championship team.
A native of the Kansas City area, Hunley and wife Nakisha have two children: seven-year old son Taylor and three-year old daughter Reagan.
