CARROLLTON, Ga. – The first road test of the season awaits the Wolves soccer team this weekend as West Georgia crosses the state line to take on a pair of GSC newcomers in Montevallo and Auburn-Montgomery. The Wolves take on Montevallo at 8 p.m. on Friday night and then head to Montgomery to take on AUM at 2 p.m. on Sunday.

West Georgia enters the weekend 1-2 after splitting a pair of league games against Union and Christian Brothers at home.

“We had a disappointing result on Sunday against Christian Brothers and knew our performance was not good enough to win the game,” said head coach Stacey Balaam. “The best response for that is to get two wins on the road this weekend and use our frustrations from the last game to motivate us.”

The Wolves fell 2-1 on Sunday after taking an early ninth minute lead, but a pair of unanswered goals by the Bucs turned the tide on a windy afternoon at University Field.

Friday night’s 1-0 win over Union was the first career win for Balaam as UWG defeated the Bulldogs 1-0 on Nikki Conte’s 75th minute game winner.

Now the Wolves shift focus to the road where they take on a Montevallo team that has played just one game and sits at 0-1 after a GSC loss to Valdosta State last Friday.

“Our intention for training this week is to break down the areas that need improvement,” added Balaam. “The girls know what is expected of them and how challenging each game is within the Gulf South conference so we have to pay attention to the details and understand that games are won or lost sometimes with the finest of margins.”

Auburn-Montgomery is 1-1 as they enter the weekend. The Warhawks are new to the GSC and play at North Alabama on Friday night.

Balaam is excited about the opportunity to go back to where she played collegiately as a head coach. “It will be nice to return to my Alma Mater and face them as an opposing head coach. I had a lot of good memories on that field as a player and it would be nice to get a victory there as a coach,” said Balaam.

Friday’s game is set for an 8 p.m. EST kickoff from Varsity Field in Montevallo, Ala.
