CARROLLTON, Ga. - The 2017-18 men's basketball season begins for the University of West Georgia on Saturday evening, as the Wolves hit the road for the GSC/SIAC Challenge in Cleveland, Tenn. Today, uwgsports.com introduces the final member of the 2017 recruiting class, as we meet junior forward Karlos Odum in today's "Meet the Wolves" feature.
Odum comes to West Georgia as a transfer from Division I North Florida, where he played for two seasons before joining the Wolves in Carrollton. A 6-7 forward, Odum has already shown his versatility during the exhibition season, as he led the Wolves in rebounding against Carver, the was the leading scorer against Kennesaw State on Sunday, scoring 15 against the Division I opponent.
"We are very happy to have Karlos in our program," said head coach Michael Cooney. "He is a hard-working, versatile forward who can play inside and outside. He is extremely tough both mentally and physically, and his ability to run the floor with give us a big option when we are playing up-tempo."
As a sophomore last season at North Florida, Odum played in 26 games, averaging 3.4 points per game. He scored in double-figures three times, with a season-high 15 at Florida National. Odum also scored 11 against both UT Rio Grand Valley and Palm Beach Atlantic last year. Odum played in 21 games as a redshirt freshman in 2015-16, scoring a season-high of seven against Florida Gulf Coast.
Prior to signing with North Florida, Odum spent a year playing at Faith Baptist Academy in Ludowici, Ga., where he averaged 21 points and 6 rebounds a game against some of the top post grad programs in the country. As a senior at Bartow, he averaged 10.5 points and seven rebounds a game while helping lead the Yellow Jackets to the Class 7A State semifinals. A first-team All-County honoree, Karlos was picked to play in the 2013 Florida Athletic Coaches Association (FACA) All-Star game.
He began his prep career as a three-year starter at Tenoroc High, becoming the school's all-time leading scorer with over 1,000 points while also collecting over 500 rebounds. A three-time All-County selection, Odum averaged 15 points and 11 rebounds a game as a junior. He was named one of the top campers and was selected to play in the Orange/White All Star Classic at the prestigious Five Star Basketball Camp in Orlando, Fla., following his junior campaign.
The Wolves will open the 2017-18 season this weekend at the GSC/SIAC Challenge, hosted by Lee University. West Georgia will open against Miles on Saturday at 7 p.m., and will take on Tuskegee at 2 p.m. on Sunday afternoon. The 2017-18 home opener will be on Saturday, November 18 at 4:00 p.m. against Augusta.
