GULF SHORES, Ala. – The UWG softball team finished off the Gulf Coast Invitational with an 8-3 win over Barry on Sunday afternoon, starting the season 4-1 in Gulf Shores, Alabama.

After a weather delay moved the game back two hours, the Wolves came out and looked good early, using small ball to manufacture a run on just one hit as Raven Smith’s RBI single scored Ashley Ellison who got on after being hit by a pitch to lead off the game.

Barry responded with three runs on two hits and a pair of errors in their half of the second, taking the early lead. Those would prove to be the only runs Barry would score on the day.

West Georgia added a run in the third on three hits, with Sydney Smith picking up the RBI to cut the deficit to one run. The next inning, the Wolves would tie things up with their third run, scoring without a hit and aiding from two Barry errors.

West Georgia broke through with four runs in the sixth inning, taking a 7-4 lead. After Alley Taylor got a lead-off walk, she would steal second and get to third on a fly ball. She would then score on a Sierra Stella single. Raven Smith, Lexie Stohr, Lexi Close, and Cardoza then strung together consecutive hits to break the game wide open.

Allie Parkerson, Ashley Ellison, and Sierra Stella all had hits in the seventh, adding a final run for the Wolves.

Lexi Close and Katie Foote both pitched on the day, with Foote going five innings and picking up the win, getting the freshman off to a 3-0 start on the year.

Offensively, the Wolves were led by sophomore Raven Smith who finished the day 3-for-5 with an RBI while Sierra Stella finished 2-for-4 at the dish with a pair of RBI. Lexi Close also recorded a multi-hit game.

West Georgia finished the opening weekend of the season going 4-1 after Sunday’s win. The Wolves are back in action next week, traveling to Tampa on Thursday for a doubleheader at 6 p.m.
