CARROLLTON, Ga. – A dominant pitching performance from two Wolves helped the West Georgia baseball team defeat West Alabama in a 12-1 game at Cole Field on Thursday evening, improving West Georgia to 5-0 on the season.


Playing the Tigers in non-conference action, the Wolves went to Andres Fernandez on the mound, and got a brilliant performance from the junior. Fernandez gave up a leadoff triple to Austin Moffett who then scored on a wild pitch, but Fernandez was lights out from that point on, allowing just one other hit and striking out four in five total innings of work.


West Georgia broke through and took the lead with a pair of runs in the third inning, and then went on to add at least one run in each inning from there on out including a six spot in the eighth.


In the third, Ben Utley got it started, reaching on an error by the Tigers’ shortstop, one of seven UWA errors in the game. Marlowe then singled on a hit-and-run, moving Utley to third. After Nick Poskey was hit by a pitch, Nick Poskey drew a walk, scoring the first run for UWG. Chris Michals then added a run on a sac fly to take the lead.


Utley then doubled home a run in the fourth, scoring junior Tucker Breen. In the fifth, Price Peters drove in one of his three runs on the day, singling home Nick Poskey.


Dalton Reagin then came in to pitch in relief, and ended up going the distance, throwing four total innings, allowing just two hits and striking out four, earning the seniors first win of 2018.


West Georgia’s seventh inning run came when Cade Marlowe stole second and the throw was in the dirt and got through to center field, scoring Utley. Price Peters doubled home another run, ripping it down the line in the seventh inning, stretching the lead to 6-1 for the Wolves.


In the eighth, the Wolves scored six runs on three hits and three West Alabama errors, picking up RBI from Nick Poskey, Price Peters, Tucker Breen, Ben Utley, and Cade Marlowe.


Peters finished the game going 3-for-4 with a trio RBI to lead the offense for West Georgia. Marlowe and Utley also picked up multi-hit game as Marlowe was also 3-for-4 with two walks and an RBI. Utley went 2-for-4 with two RBI. Poskey picked up three RBI on the night.


West Georgia is off to a 5-0 start to the season, and will host West Alabama in a doubleheader tomorrow at Cole Field. First pitch for tomorrow’s game is set for 1 p.m.
