TAMPA, Fla. – Another dominant performance from Katie Foote and a breakthrough performance from Lexi Close propelled the Wolves softball team to a pair of close victories as UWG swept Tampa on the road by 2-0 and 1-0 finals on Thursday.
The Wolves would score just three runs in the two games combined, but wouldn’t need any more than that as Foote and Close combined to allow just seven hits over two games. Close also went 3-for-5 with an RBI at the plate in the two games combined.
Reigning Gulf South Conference Pitcher and Freshman of the Week Katie Foote was back in the circle on Thursday and she did not disappoint, giving head coach Al Thomas a complete game, five-hit shutout as the Bishop, Georgia native moved to 4-0 on the season.
Both teams remained scoreless through the first three innings, but in the fourth Lexi Close tripled home a run as Lexie Stohr came around to give the Wolves the lead.
UWG added a fifth inning insurance run as Sydney Smith led off the top half with a double, and after a sac bunt scored on an RBI double from freshman Alley Taylor. Taylor then got to third on a wild pitch with only one out, but the Wolves couldn’t push another run across.
That’s all the help Foote would need as she surrendered just one hit over the final three innings, winning her fourth of the season.
In the second game of the doubleheader, the Wolves needed just one run as Lexi Close pitched her best game of her short career as the freshman went the distance, throwing a complete game, two-hit shutout.
Sydney Smith got the big hit of the game as she backed up a leadoff Lexie Stohr double with a double of her own, scoring Thomason who pinch ran for Stohr at second.
The Wolves wouldn’t need an insurance in this one as Close remained dominant all game long, winning her second game of the season. Not only did Close dominate in the circle, but the freshman went 2-for-2 at the plate.
West Georgia is now 6-1 on the season and continues their Florida road trip tomorrow taking on Eckerd in a 5 p.m. doubleheader in St. Petersburg, Florida.
