CARROLLTON, Ga. – Despite 30 points from Marquill Smith, the UWG men’s basketball team fell 71-85 to the 17th-ranked West Florida Argonauts on Saturday night at The Coliseum.
After shooting 40 percent in the opening half including seven three-pointers, the Wolves went ice cold in the second half, shooting 29 percent in the second half and hitting just one three pointer.
Marquill Smith was sensational however, scoring 30 points and tied a career-high with 14 rebounds to record the Miami, Florida native’s seventh career double-double.
West Georgia came out hot in the first half, hitting seven three-pointers to open the game. The Wolves never trailed in the opening half and led by as much as seven at the 2:10 mark in the half, and despite the hot shooting, West Florida was able to use a 7-0 run over the final two minutes of the half to tie things up at 42-42 at the break.
Marquill Smith single-handedly scored over half of West Georgia’s points in the opening half, putting up 22 points on 8-of-16 from the field, 4-of-8 from three-point range, and 2-of-2 from the charity stripe.
After the Wolves led for the entirety of the first half, West Florida came out and did the same for the second half. The Argos used a 6-0 run in the first part of the period to build an eight point lead with just under 13 minutes to play. West Florida had extended the lead to double-figures but the Wolves cut it back to eight at the under-12 media timeout with 11:53 to play.
West Georgia got the deficit down to three with 9:22 left, but the Wolves struggled shooting the ball late, going 1-of-14 down the final stretch of the game and falling to the Argos.
Along with Smith’s 29, Paul Turner and William Sides each finished in double-figures with 13 and 11 respectively. Turner also led West Georgia with five assists.
The Wolves fall to 11-13 overall and 6-11 in Gulf South Conference play while West Florida moves to 22-3 overall with a 14-3 record in league play.
UWG is back in action at home on Wednesday hosting Shorter on Senior Day in a 7:30 contest at The Coliseum.
