COLUMBUS, Ga. – The UWG track and field team began their championship outdoor season with a bang on Saturday, placing first with 191 points at the Cougar Invitational in Columbus, Georgia.
The Wolves finished 90 points ahead of the second place team Clark Atlanta, claiming the victory in the team portion, highlighted by outstanding individual performances by Amina Saunders, Trisan Haughton, and Paige Peterson.
Amina Saunders claimed top honors in the 100m and 400m hurdles. Haughton also won two events as she placed first in both the high jump and long jump. Lastly, Paige Peterson’s jump of 11.23 in the triple jump was good for a first place finish for the freshman.
While she didn’t win the event, sophomore Nya Moses broke her own school record in the shot put with a throw of 11.50m.
West Georgia took first and third in the 4x100 relay, with the A team consisting of Elizabeth Folsome, China Amey, Dawn McCaskill, and Rolayo Roberts claiming the top spot with a time of 48.92.
The B team finished third with a time of 50.35. That squad consisted of Emani Collins, Andrea Foster, Breonjae Kittles, and Makalah Cannon
The Wolves got six points out of the 4x400 relay team as D’Erika Montford, Amie Wimberly, Alexis Dukes, and Nikkita Gordon finished third with a time of 4:22.00.
The Wolves had an outstanding day in hurdles, highlighted by Amina Saunders sweep of the 100m and 400m hurdles. Saunders finished the 100m hurdles with a time of 15.41, while a time of 1:07.55 took top honors in the 400m hurdles.
Also in the 100m hurdles, freshman Kennedy Davis finished third with a time of 16.10 to get six points for the Wolves. Davis also had success in the 400m hurdles, placing third, helping the Wolves win first second and third in the event. Paige Berriochoa’s time of 1:10.33 put her second in the 400m hurdles.
Emani Collins highlighted the sprints for the Wolves with a second place finish in the 400m run with a time of 1:00.47. In the 200m, UWG got points from a sixth place finish from Rolayo Roberts with a time of 26.6, with Makalah Cannon finishing seventh with a time of 27.27, alose grabbing points for the Wolves.
In the shortest sprint, it was Roberts again pacing the Wolves, finishing fourth with a time of 12.69, good for six points. In fifth was Elizabeth Folsome while Cannon finished sixth with times of 12.79 and 12.91 respectively.
D’Erika Montford was the only competitor for UWG in the 800m and she finished third with a time of 2:33.48, grabbing six points for head coach Ryan Bailey and the Wolves.
In the 1500m, Alexis Smith and Mackenzie Morse both placed high enough for points, with Smith coming in fifth with a final time of 5:37.96, while Morse’s time of 5:41.89 was good for an eighth place finish.
Smith also went on to finish seventh in the 3000m run, finishing in 12:40.50.
Trisan Haughton took first in both high jump and long jump as she put up a mark of 1.60m in the high jump in her first outdoor action of the season. In the long jump, Haughton jumped 5.08m to claim the top honors.
Freshman Paige Peterson won the triple jump with a top jump of 11.23m, gaining 10 points in her first career outdoor meet for the Wolves.
Alexis Alofuokhai finished second in the high jump, while China Amey grabbed second and eight points for the Wolves in the long jump.
Nya Moses broke her own school record in the shot put, throwing a distance of 11.50m, besting her previous mark of 10.52m. Moses took third in the event and got six points for the cause.
Paige Berriochoa took second in the javelin with a throw of 27.14m, getting another eight points for the Wolves. In the discus, senior Caitlin Teknipp finished in second place with a top mark of 34.62m. Teknipp also finished third in the javelin, throwing 27.08m.
Paige Berriochoa and Faith Moss finished one and two in the pole vault, with Berriochoa’s top mark being 2.60m.
