CARROLLTON, Ga. – Marquill Smith was the GSC’s top scorer a season ago, and much is expected this season of the West Georgia Wolves’ standout. That face was underscored Thursday as Smith was named to the 2018-19 Preseason All-Gulf South Conference Men’s Basketball Team.

A senior from Miami Gardens, Fla., Smith averaged 23.1 points per game for the Wolves last season.  He was also in fourth in the GSC in rebounding with 8.5 per game, and ranked in the league’s top 10 in three-point field goal percentage, three-pointers made, and in free throw percentage.

"Marquill Smith is a very talented player and well deserving of this honor from the coaches in the GSC," said head coach Dave Moore. "He put up tremendous numbers last season as a junior and is poised to have a great year for us this season."

Last spring, Smith was honored as a first team member of the All-Gulf South Conference Team. He also was named a first-team member of the 2018 Division II Conference Commissioner’s Association All-South Region Basketball Team.

"Marquill is a guy that can score at all 3 levels and rebounds the ball extremely well at his position," Moore said. "We are happy for Marquill, and will count on him to lead us in his senior season at West Georgia."

Smith was selected for the preseason honor in balloting conducted among the league’s head coaches. The coaches were not allowed to vote for players on their own teams.

League coaches were not as high on the Wolves’ chances to contend in the Gulf South Conference race in their inaugural season under new coach Dave Moore.  UWG was selected ninth in the poll for the upcoming season. To no one’s surprise, Valdosta State was chosen as the GSC’s preseason favorite.

Excitement for the upcoming basketball season gets ramped up Thursday night with the annual Wolves Madness event at The Coliseum. Both UWG teams will be introduced to the crowd, and both will have practice drills. Also, the announcement will be made for the official name for the student section in The Coliseum.

West Georgia’s men open the new season on November 1 in Athens when they face the Georgia Bulldogs in an exhibition game. The official opener comes November 9 when UWG faces Palm Beach Atlantic in the GSC/SSC Crossover in Cleveland, Tenn.
