CARROLLTON, Ga. - After a quick holiday break, head coach Dave Moore and the West Georgia men's basketball team will return to action on Saturday evening at The Coliseum, taking on the Johnson C. Smith Golden Bulls in the final non-conference tilt before Gulf South Conference action begins next Thursday at Alabama Huntsville.

West Georgia comes into Saturday's contest with a 2-3 record on the year after a 104-80 road loss on Tuesday evening to the North Georgia Nighthawks. Marquill Smith and Gerald Blount led the way for the Wolves in the contest, but the Nighthawks shot 53 percent from the field to hand the loss to UWG. Johnson C. Smith fell to 1-2 on the year on Tuesday, suffering an 85-78 loss at Belmont Abbey. The Golden Bulls had three players in double-figures against Belmont Abbey, but the Crusaders countered with four double-figure scorers and 57 percent shooting from the field.
Smith, a senior swingman for the Wolves, and sophomore Greg James are in a tight battle for the lead in three-point shooting on the team thus far. James has the advantage in percentage, hitting 14-of-27 on the year for a 52 percent clip from long range. Smith has the slight lead in volume, hitting 15 from the three-point line thus far on the year at a 34 percent clip. As a team, the Wolves are hitting 32 percent from beyond the arc in the first five games of the year.
Rebounding for the Wolves
Another tight battle sits for the Wolves' lead in rebounding, as Smith and Blount come into Saturday's contest averaging 7.2 rebounds per contest. Smith had the first double-double of the year against Queens, hitting for 29 points and pulling down 16 rebounds. Blount has flirted with a double-double in each of the last three games, beginning with six points and 10 boards against Queens. He then had 17 points and nine rebounds against Benedict, then had 19 points and seven rebounds against North Georgia. As a team, the Wolves are averaging 34.8 rebounds per game this season.
In the GSC
West Georgia comes into the sixth game of the season averaging 76.6 points per game as a team, good for fifth in the Gulf South Conference. Smith leads the way for UWG with 26.6 points per game, which is currently second in the league behind Union's Tyree Boykin. Blount and Smith are tied for fifth in the conference in rebounding, averaging 7.2 boards per game and Aren Ulmer is tied for fourth in the league in assists, averaging 5.0 per game. Smith and Ulmer are the top two in the GSC in steals, with Ulmer averaging 2.4 steals per game and Smith at 2.2 steals per game.
