AMERICUS, Ga. – The UWG softball team got back to their winning ways on Wednesday, sweeping a non-conference doubleheader over Georgia Southwestern, winning game one 5-2 and game two 9-3.

 

The sweep improves West Georgia to 10-10 overall heading into another weekend of Gulf South Conference play. The losses dropped GSW to 7-7 overall.

 

Game One

Katie Foote pitched a complete game in the opener, giving up seven hits and one walk while striking out seven batters. Both Foote and GSW starter Jennifer Jernigan pitched scoreless innings in the first three frames of the game, and UWG struck first with a three-spot in the fourth.

 

Raven Smith started it off with a one out single and then stole second and later came in to score an RBI double from Madison Chambers, who later scored on an RBI single up the middle by Mallory Walker. The third run came in on Hannah Scarbrough single.

 

Foote ran into her first real trouble in the fourth, giving up a two-run homer to Aimee Oglesby to cut the lead to just one.

 

The West Georgia offense gave Foote a pair of insurance runs in the fifth as Chambers had another double, this time driving in two.

 

Chambers led the Wolves with a 2-for-4 game and three RBI while Alley Taylor and Raven Smith also had two-hit games. Walker had an RBI as well and finished with one hit.

 

Game Two

West Georgia jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the top of the first in game two, scoring on three hits in the inning. Alley Taylor and Hannah Scarbrough led off with back to back singles and came into score on a Madison Chambers single.

 

In the bottom of the first, Lexi Close, West Georgia’s starter, loaded the bases by hitting a batter and walking a pair, but pitched out of the jam to get away unscathed. From there she settled down, giving up two runs on a home run, but struck out a career-high 10 in five innings of work.

 

The Wolves added a single run in the second as Kristyn Nix drove in her first career run, scoring Mallory Walker who led off the inning with a triple to right field.

 

Four hits yielded three runs in the third, the first coming off of three straight hits from Raven Smith, Madison Chambers, and Lexie Stohr with Stohr picking up an RBI. Mallory Walker also singled home a run in the inning and Nix drove in a second run of the game on a sac fly to right field.

 

Chambers delivered another blow in the fourth as the senior drove in three more with her second home run of the season, making it 9-0 at the time.

 

It was the bottom of the fourth that the Canes got on the board with the pinch hit home run from Elizabeth Wills.

 

Lindsye Jefferson came on in relief and allowed a single run in the seventh, and Foote came back in relief to get the final out of the inning as UWG won 9-3.

 

Chambers finished 3-for-4 with five RBI in the game, giving her eight on the day while Alley Taylor also had three hits in game two.

 

The Wolves got two hit games from Lexie Stohr and Mallory Walker as well with Nix driving in two runs with one hit in the second game.

 

Next Up

West Georgia is back at home this weekend hosting West Alabama in a series that has been shifted due to weather. The Wolves and Tigers get underway with a Sunday doubleheader at 2 p.m. with the final game set for Monday afternoon at 2 p.m.
