CARROLLTON, Ga. – the University of West Georgia softball team extended their win streak to four games on Wednesday, sweeping a non-conference doubleheader over Christian Brothers at University Field.
It took just five innings for the Wolves to win game one, taking the opener 10-1. In game two, the Wolves scored four runs and Lexi Close and Katie Foote combined to shutout the Bucs as West Georgia improved to 14-11 overall. Despite CBU being in the GSC, Wednesday’s games did not count towards the GSC Standings.
Raya Moncus started the opener on Wednesday, and after giving up a leadoff triple, the senior struck out the side, to set the tone for the rest of the game. After a scoreless second, the UWG bats put up a four spot for the early advantage.
Lexie Stohr and Cassie Henderson led off with back-to-back singles and then the Wolves loaded the bases as Alley Taylor walked. Madison Slappey then singled home a pair of runs and then came around to score on a wild pitch, as did Taylor.
CBU used two hits and a stolen base to get on the board in the third. In the bottom half, Stohr and Henderson drove in two more as Stohr’s single scored Peyton Stallworth who led off the frame with a triple. Henderson then ripped a double to right center, making it 6-1, Wolves after three.
Ashley Ellison and Mallory Walker both singled to start the fourth and then both scored on a two-RBI double from Stallworth. The next batter was Chambers, and she homered off the scoreboard in left center to put the Wolves up by nine.
Moncus pitched all five innings, earning her fourth win of the season. Moncus gave up the one earned run on five hits and struck out a career high 11 batters.
A whole host of Wolves had two hits on the day as Walker, Stallworth, Stohr, and Henderson led the UWG offense. Slappey had just one hit but drove in two RBI to lead the squad along with Stallworth and Chambers.
Chambers was at it again in game two as she homered to left field again, this time driving in three to put UWG up 3-0 after one inning. The homer scored Ellison who reached on a walk and Walker who doubled to left center.
Sophomore Lexi Close got the start for UWG, and pitched five scoreless innings, and allowed back-to-back singles to start the sixth, and Al Thomas went to his bullpen and brought in Katie Foote.
Hannah Scarbrough drove in the fourth and final run of the day on an RBI single in the sixth.
Lexi Close moved to 2-0 on the year and struck out nine batters and allowed seven hits and one walk in five innings pitched. Foote pitched two perfect innings to earn a save, her first of the season, and struck out two in the process.
Henderson, Walker, and Stohr kept the bats hot, each rattling off two hits in game two. Chambers had the three RBI while Scarbrough also had one.
- Cassie Henderson is now a combined 10-for-12 in her last four games, while driving five RBI in that span. Her average on the year is up to .480.
- Madison Chambers two home runs on the day gives her four on the season, and 12 in her UWG career. Her season total of four is tied for second in the GSC.
West Georgia travels to Delta State this weekend for a three-game series. The action is set to begin with a Saturday doubleheader at 1 p.m. with a single game on Sunday at 1 p.m. to wrap up the series.
