CLEVELAND, Miss. – A four game win streak came to an end on Saturday as the Wolves softball team fell 6-0 at the hands of Delta State in the opening game of a three-game Gulf South Conference set in Cleveland, Mississippi.

The loss drops West Georgia to 14-12 overall and put the Wolves at 3-7 in GSC play while the Lady Statesmen of Delta State improve to 12-7 and 4-6 in league play.

Both pitchers were cruising early on as UWG’s Katie Foote pitched two scoreless frames before running into trouble in the third. DSU used three hits and an error to score four runs, with all of those coming on a two-out grand slam by Jordan Jones.

DSU would capitalize on another UWG error in the sixth, scoring two to give themselves a 6-0 advantage.

Offensively, the Wolves had just six hits, and went 0-for-10 with runners on base. DSU’s starter, Nicole Fullilove pitched all seven innings and struck out five.

Sophomore Hannah Scarbrough had two of UWG’s hits, finishing the day 2-for-4 at the plate. Madison Chambers, Lexie Stohr, Peyton Stallworth, and Madison Slappey had the other four hits for UWG.

The Wolves and Statesmen reconvene tomorrow to wrap up the weekend series. Sunday’s doubleheader is set for a 1 p.m. EST first pitch.
