AUGUSTA, Ga. – It was a third straight non-conference doubleheader sweep on Wednesday as the UWG softball team topped Augusta in a pair of games at Jaguar Field in Augusta, Georgia.
The Wolves shutout the Jaguars 4-0 in game one of the day, and then fell behind early in game two, only to score six in the fifth, and complete the sweep with a 6-1 game two win.
Easily the highlight of the day was Hannah Scarbrough’s efforts in the two games combined, finishing 4-for-8 with three doubles and five RBI. The sophomore from Newnan had two doubles and two RBI in game one, and added a bases clearing double in game two.
With the sweep, West Georgia moves to 16-14 overall, while the Jaguars fall to 3-13 on their campaign.
West Georgia never trailed in the opening game of the doubleheader, scoring a run in the first and second innings to jump out 2-0. In the first, sophomore Hannah Scarbrough led off with a single and after stealing second and advancing to third on a groundout, scored on a sacrifice fly RBI from Raven Smith.
In the second, it was Scarbrough who drove in a run as she doubled home Mallory Walker who got on base with a two-out walk.
Walker led off the sixth with a single, and stealing second would again come in to score on an RBI double from Scarbrough. Raven Smith droive in her second run of the day as she also doubled, scoring Scarbrough and putting UWG up 4-0.
Wolves’ pitchers Katie Foote and Morgan Goree combined to shutout Augusta and hold the Jaguars to just one hit. Foote surrendered the lone hit in her four innings in the circle. Foote struck out one and earned her fifth win of the year. Goree returned from an injury to toss three no-hit innings while striking out three and earning a save.
Scarbrough and Smith drove in all four runs for the Wolves with Scarborugh finishing 3-for-4 with the two doubles and a pair of RBI. Smith had the one hit and two RBI.
The offense took a little longer to get going in game two, and the Jaguars took a 1-0 lead in the first inning on a solo shot from Madelyn Libby.
That’s all the runs Augusta would get as Raya Moncus and Lindsye Jefferson held the Jaguars to just three hits from that point on.
West Georgia didn’t get on the board until the fifth inning, when they struck for six runs on six hits and two Jaguar errors. Eleven total batters came to the plate in the fifth, and nine of those came up with two outs. Kristyn Nix got it started with a two-out single and then promptly stole second base. A Lexie Close walk and a Madison Slappey single then loaded the bases, setting the stage for Hannah Scarbrough. The sophomore ripped a double to left center, clearing the bases and making it 3-1. Ashley Ellison then singled home Scarbrough and later came in to score on an RBI triple from Madison Chambers who ended up scoring on an Augusta error.
Moncus finished with the one run allowed in four innings pitched, and earned her fifth win of the season. Jefferson pitched three innings, allowing no hits and striking out one.
Four Wolves, Ellison, Chambers, Nix, and Close each had two hits in the second game of the day with Chambers and Ellison picking up an RBI each. Scarbrough had the one hit and three RBI.
The Wolves return home for the first time in over a week on Saturday, opening a three-game Gulf South Conference series against Alabama Huntsville. Saturday’s doubleheader begins at 1 p.m.
