CARROLLTON, Ga. - The winning streak reached nine games on Wednesday afternoon at Cole Field as the Wolves blasted the Georgia Southwestern Hurricanes by a 10-4 count in non-conference action.
The game was also the ninth-straight for the Wolves with seven runs or more, and the team batting average moved to .298 on the year.
The game started off in a shaky fashion for the Wolves, as Georgia Southwestern scored three runs without an out recorded in the top of the first. The Hurricanes delivered on two doubles and a home run in that span to take a 3-0 lead. West Georgia's lineup did not rest on their laurels in the bottom of the first, matching the Hurricanes with three runs.
In the bottom of the first, the Wolves' first four hitters reached base, with singles from Nick Poskey, Cade Marlowe, and Logan Taylor. West Georgia scored a run on Marlowe's single, then two more on the single from Taylor to tie the contest at 3-3. For Marlowe, the base hit extended his now season-long hitting streak to 13 games and he has now reached safely in 18 consecutive games.
After Tyler Garner retired the side for Georgia Southwestern in the top of the second, the Wolves continued to swing hot bats, putting up five runs in the frame. The inning started off with five straight batters reaching base for the Wolves. Poskey had the third hit of the inning, driving in Lane Griffith, then Marlowe was the fifth to reach base with another RBI single to put the Wolves up 5-3. West Georgia added three more in the inning, with two coming on bases-loaded walks and the third on a wild pitch that put UWG up 8-3.
Georgia Southwestern put their first run on the board against Garner in the top of the fifth, but the Wolves came right back with a run in the bottom half of the inning. Jermond Williams led off the inning and was hit by a pitch, then came home later in the frame on an RBI single from Nick Poskey to give the Wolves a 9-4 advantage. The Wolves added another in the bottom of the eighth when Marlowe delivered a two-out double followed by another RBI single for Taylor.
Tyler Garner picks up the victory on the day after going seven innings with one run allowed on five hits, and he moves to 3-0 on the year. Poskey and Marlowe were each 3-for-5 on the afternoon to lead the Wolves at the plate. Drew Hayles came on in the ninth
