Carrollton, GA – Preseason camp begins Saturday for the 2019 West Georgia Wolves football team. Among the 120-plus players returning to campus are four members of the 2019 Preseason All-Gulf South Conference Team.
Two senior defensive standouts and a pair of sophomore special teams performers were voted to the team in balloting by the league’s nine head coaches. The honorees include linebacker Korie Rogers (Buford) and end Chad Price (Snellville) from the UWG defense. Also voted to the squad is return specialist LaPerion Perry and kicker Omar Cervantes.
Rogers, Perry, and Cervantes were all Division II All-Americans following the 2018 season, and all four were named All-Gulf South Conference after leading West Georgia to a 10-2 record and a berth in the NCAA Playoffs. The Wolves have been to the playoffs in four of the last five seasons, with UWG producing 50 wins in that span.
Thursday, the Wolves also learned that they are projected for the runner-up spot in this season’s Gulf South Conference standings. West Georgia was chosen for the number two spot in the annual poll of head coaches from the nine-team league. The Wolves picked up 55 points in the poll, trailing only preseason favorite Valdosta State. UWG finished the 2018 regular season with a 7-1 GSC record, finishing second in the final conference standings.
Teams received eight points for a first-place vote, seven for a second-place vote, etc. The head coaches were not allowed to vote for their own teams.
After the Blazers and Wolves, West Alabama was picked for the third spot. West Florida was selected fourth and received the only first-place vote to not go to Valdosta State. The remainder of the poll had Florida Tech picked fifth, followed by Delta State, North Greenville, Mississippi College, and Shorter.
Coach David Dean and his staff will welcome the 2019 Wolves back to campus Saturday for the beginning of preseason drills. The team will busy with check-in, receive equipment, meetings and other organizational activities set for Saturday and Sunday. The first practice of the preseason is set for Monday morning at 8:30.
