CARROLLTON, Ga. - The West Georgia Wolves are back in action this weekend as the team prepares for the Gulf South Conference Championship, held this year in Montevallo, Ala. on Saturday.
After finishing sixth overall as a team last week at the Bobcat Invitational, head coach Ryan Bailey and his young squad are looking to put a stamp on their season with a solid performance at the GSC Championships.
Devin Helms, Lauryn Wilson, and Deanna Rawlings have stepped up to the challenge in recent meets as they powered the Wolves to the best finishes of the season in the last two meets of the year. That bodes well for the conference championships this weekend as well as the future as all three runners are freshman.
Helms has proved to be one of the leaders of Bailey’s team in 2019, as she has established herself as one of the Wolves' top runners in her freshman year. Helms finished last week’s 6K in 10th place, her second top-10 finish of the season, with a time of 23:20.1.
The Wolves' next top-runners were Lauryn Wilson, who also had a strong showing at the Bobcat Invitational as she finished in the top-40 with a time of 25:52.4. Deanna Rawlings finished next with a time of 27:55.0 and top-60 placement.
Their experience will be needed this weekend as well, as several of West Georgia’s conference rivals will be participating in the event, such as Lee, Montevallo, West Florida and West Alabama.
