CARROLLTON, Ga. - West Georgia freshman middle blocker Tierra White put on a show worthy of recognition this past weekend in Huntsville, Ala., as the Columbus, Ga. native was named the Gulf South Conference Freshman of the Week, announced Tuesday by league officials.
White becomes the first UWG player to earn a GSC weekly award since Helen Menchinger and Casey Roethler combined for the Offensive and Defensive Player of the Week on September 8, 2015. She is also the first West Georgia player to be named the conference Freshman of the Week.
The West Georgia offense exploded after a slow start to the weekend against Harding, hitting at least .200 in each of the last three matches of the tournament, including a whopping .272 against Trevecca Nazarene on Saturday afternoon. White was a catalyst for that turnaround, delivering on at least 10 kills in each of the final three matches of the weekend at a .390 hitting percentage.
Against Harding in the season opener, White had eight kills, then the freshman turned things around with 13 against Alabama Huntsville on Friday evening. On Saturday, she delivered 10 kills in each match, hitting .500 against TNU and .440 against Montevallo.
The Wolves will be back in action this weekend in St. Augustine, Fla., taking on the field at the Flagler Classic.
