Carrollton, GA – A pair of West Georgia Wolves basketball standouts were honored Tuesday by the Gulf South Conference. Senior guard Marquill Smith was named GSC Player of the Week, while Jared Simmons received GSC Freshman of the Week honors for their performances in last week’s wins over Oakwood and Mississippi College.
Smith, a senior from Miami Gardens, Fla., scored double-double performances in both games a week ago. He scored 21 points and pulled in 15 rebounds in the Wolves’ Wednesday win over Oakwood. Saturday, Smith scored 20 and had 11 rebounds in the victory over Mississippi College.
Simmons, a freshman from Newington, Conn., also had impressive numbers in last week’s contests. He came off the bench score 20 in the Oakwood victory, and he added 15 in the Mississippi College win.
The honors for Smith and Simmons are the second of the season for each. Smith was named league player of the week on November 27th, while Simmons claimed top freshman honors from the conference on December 11th.
The Wolves are now 9-5 on the season, 4-2 in the GSC. They will next try to begin a new win streak as they head to the road for the first of three straight away from The Coliseum. UWG visits Cleveland, Tenn., for Thursday night action vs. the Lee Flames. Tip time is set for 8 p.m. from Walker Arena on the Lee campus.
