CARROLLTON, Ga. - Michael Zabetakis scored 12 of his career-high 20 points in the second half Saturday afternoon at The Coliseum, helping lead the West Georgia Wolves to an 87-79 victory over the West Florida Argonauts. The win snapped a three-game losing streak for the Wolves.
The freshman became the fifth West Georgia player this season to score at least 20 points in a game. Senior Marquill Smith continued his dominance with his 10th double-double of the year, scoring 31 points and pulling down 11 rebounds to lead all scorers in the contest. It was the third consecutive game with 30 or more points for Smith, and the sixth time in the last eight that he has reached that threshold.
Smith opened the game with back-to-back three-pointers, but the Argos came roaring right back with a 9-0 run that erased the Wolves' early advantage. The next 14 minutes on the clock was a bit of a longer see-saw battle, as West Florida held the lead for five minutes before West Georgia regained the lead and held it for five minutes.
At the 3:39 mark of the first half, freshman Jared Simmons buried a three-pointer that put the Wolves on top 34-31, and West Georgia would not relinquish the lead again in the game. Smith finished the half as he began it, hitting a three-pointer with one second left in the period, giving the Wolves a 47-40 advantage heading into the locker room at the break. The senior led the Wolves with 20 points in the half.
West Georgia shot 52 percent from the field in the second half, using a strong shooting game to keep the Argos at bay. With 1:40 left in the game, UWG junior forward Gerald Blount fouled out of the game, sending UWF's Rashaan Benson to the line. The Argo point guard hit both
With senior guard Aren Ulmer in foul trouble, sophomore Laperion Perry stepped into the moment, dishing out a career-high 10 assists to lead the UWG offensive. In addition to Smith and Zabetakis, Simmons also had double-digit scoring on the afternoon with 11.
The Wolves move to 13-10 on the year and 8-7 against league competition, while the Argos fall to 10-14 overall and 6-10 against GSC opponents. will be back in action next Thursday, taking on Auburn-Montgomery on the road.
