CARROLLTON, Ga. – For the second straight week a UWG Softball standout has been honored by the Gulf South Conference as Lexi Close was named the GSC Pitcher and Freshman of the Week on Tuesday.
Close was a force to be reckoned with in the circle last week for the Wolves, starting two games and pitching a total of 11.0 innings of shutout softball, allowing just six hits and striking out 13, all while picking up two wins to help UWG to a 3-1 week overall.
Not only was the Hillsboro, Missouri native dominant in the circle, but she made an impact at the plate as well, going 4-for-10 on the week. Close had a double and a triple with a pair of RBI in four games, all while slugging .700 on the week.
Last week, Katie Foote was also named Pitcher and Freshman of the Week, making it UWG freshman to win both of those awards in the first two weeks of the season. On the year, the duo of Foote and Close have helped the Wolves to a league best ERA of 0.98.
Close and the Wolves were set to host Columbus State on Wednesday for the 2018 home opener, but the rain and upcoming forecast have postponed that until a later date. The Wolves will now look to the weekend in Montgomery, Alabama for the GSC Opening Weekend Festival.
