MEMPHIS, Tenn. – The UWG softball team fell in a heartbreaker in Sunday’s Gulf South Conference series finale in Memphis as the Wolves lost 8-7 to the Christian Brothers Bucs on a seventh-inning walkoff solo home run.

West Georgia jumped out to a 3-0 lead, scoring two runs in the first and one in the third. Ashley Ellison and Sydney Smith got the first inning RBI for West Georgia with Ellison also driving in the run in the second.

In the bottom half of the second inning, CBU tagged UWG starter Zoie LaVergne for three runs before Katie Foote came on in relief. Foote couldn’t stop the bleeding as the Bucs struck for a total of seven innings in the frame.

UWG then responded with a single run in the third inning on Lexi Close’s first career home run as it cut it to 7-4 in the fourth.

The Wolves tied things up with three runs in the fourth inning. Sydney Smith used a sacrifice fly to put the first run of the frame on the board, but Peyton Stallworth’s two-run homer was the game-tying shot to make it 7-7.

After scoreless innings in the fifth and sixth innings, the Bucs walked it off with a leadoff solo shot in the bottom of the seventh.

West Georgia falls to 12-6 on the season with a 5-4 record in GSC play.

UWG’s next action is next weekend as the Wolves host Delta State in a weekend series at University Softball Field.
