CARROLLTON, Ga. – It’s another home weekend for the UWG softball team as the Wolves are set to host Delta State for a Friday doubleheader at 2 p.m. before wrapping up the series with the finale at 12 p.m. on Saturday at University Softball Field.
West Georgia will go for their third straight Gulf South Conference series win after taking two-of-three from Christian Brothers last weekend. The Wolves are 12-6 on the season and sit at 5-4 in GSC play.
The Lady Statesmen enter the weekend with an 11-12 overall record and a 4-5 mark in league play. DSU’s most recent conference series was at home against Auburn-Montgomery where the Lady Statesmen dropped two contests to the Warhawks in Cleveland.
For the Wolves, the freshmen in their lineup have made an immediate impact, led by Ashley Ellison Wolves with a .426 average who leads all freshmen across the conference. Fellow freshmen Lexi Close and Alley Taylor are also seeing and hitting the ball well as Close has a .405 average and Taylor is at .400.
It’s not all freshmen though for UWG, as Lexie Stohr is hitting .383 and is tied for the league lead in RBI with 23. Stohr is amazingly 10-for-10 when batting with a runner on third and less than two outs.
In the circle, West Georgia’s top pitcher in terms of ERA is Danielle Easterly whose 0.68 ERA is tops among eligible pitchers in the Gulf South Conference. Lexi Close is 4-0 on the year with a 2.50 ERA.
Offensively, Delta State is led by Mallory Myers who is currently batting .333 and Kelly Byrd who leads in homers with four and RBI with 19. DSU’s top pitcher is Taylor Johnson who is 5-5 with a 2.47 ERA. Nicole Fullilove also sees significant time in the circle for the Lady Statesmen as she is 3-1 with a 2.89 ERA, but leads DSU in innings pitched with 53.0.
The series was originally set for Saturday and Sunday, but the weekend weather forecast has forced the Wolves and Statesmen to open the series with a 2 p.m. doubleheader on Friday and a single game on Saturday at 12 p.m. to conclude the series.
