CARROLLTON, Ga. – Trailing by two shots after the first round, junior Samuel Jones fired a final round 69 to claim the individual title at the Matt Dyas Invitational at Oak Mountain Championship Golf Club on Tuesday afternoon.

 

As a team, the Wolves shot 294 in the final round and finished ninth as a team with a 36-hole total of 595. Clayton State edged Young Harris for the team title by a scorecard playoff with a 582 total over the two rounds.

 

Jones shot a two-round total of 139 on his way to his first career individual win. Jones held off Matt Elliot who also shot a final 69 to win by two strokes. Harry Bolton of Newberry led after a first round 68, but tied with Elliot in second with a final round 73.

 

Behind Jones on UWG’s squad was Dan Benson who rebounded after a tough first round with a 70 on Tuesday. The junior finished in a 25th place tie and a 148 total.

 

Ethan Jones played a consistent tournament on the week, firing a 78 to follow up Monday’s 77. The freshman was in a 57th place tie on the individual leaderboard.

 

It was a tough day for Valentine Riviere who shot an 84, and Carson Vaughn finished with a 77 in his final round. The pair finished 71st and 74th, respectively.

 

James Robillard competed as an individual and fired rounds of 78 and 77 to finish tied for 57th with Ethan Jones.

 

The Matt Dyas Invitational was the final event of the fall for the UWG men’s golf team. The Wolves will resume competition in the spring.
