CARROLLTON, Ga. - The road warrior West Georgia volleyball squad hits the road for the second-straight weekend to open the season, heading this Friday and Saturday to Bellarmine, Ken., to take on the field at the Holiday Inn Airport Fair Expo kickoff.
The Wolves come into the weekend with a 1-3 record after last weekend's trip to St. Petersburg and the Eckerd College Invitational. This weekend brings four matches for head coach Trina Braden and her squad in Kentucky, beginning on Friday morning against Trevecca Nazarene. The Trojans come into the weekend with a 2-3 overall record and have lost three straight, including the last two by a 3-0 score to Gulf South Conference opponents.
West Georgia was led by a freshman and sophomore outside hitter last weekend, as freshman Anjelina Webb and sophomore McKenna Wharton took turns as the leading hitter in the Wolves' first four matches of the year. In the first UWG victory of 2017, Wharton had 13 kills at a .357 clip, committing just three hitting errors in the match. Webb had 11 kills against Notre Dame in the second match of the year and is currently second on the team in kills. Sophomore Madi Fleming had 29 assists in the win over Kentucky Wesleyan, leading the Wolves to a team hitting percentage of .313.
For the opening opponent, Trevecca Nazarene, the Trojans have spread out the hitting over the course of their first five matches of the year. Six different players have at least 18 kills thus far this season, led by Madison Clements, who has 27 kills at a .300 hitting percentage.
The Wolves will take on Bellarmine in their second match of the day, with first serve in that match scheduled for 2 p.m. Bellarmine comes into the weekend at 4-0 on the year thus far. On Saturday, West Georgia will again take the court at 9 a.m., this time against an Arkansas-Fort Smith squad that comes into the weekend with a 2-2 record thus far on the year. The weekend will conclude at 4:30 p.m. on Saturday afternoon, as the Wolves take on Tiffin. The Dragons enter the week at 3-1 after a solid weekend at the Christian Brothers tournament.
