CARROLLTON, Ga. – Women’s basketball season is just two days from officially getting underway as the Wolves are set to travel to Tampa, Fla. to take on Palm Beach Atlantic on Friday and then take on host Tampa on Saturday.

Head coach Scott Groninger and the Wolves are looking to build on last year as they return eight lettermen from a team that went 13-9 in Gulf South Conference play in 2016-17.

West Georgia is led in the frontcourt by All-GSC performer De’Ashia Jones who led the Wolves in scoring last year, averaging 15.4 points per game while also pulling down 8.9 rebounds per game. Additionally, Jones set the UWG single season blocks record with 89 last year.

Jones is joined by familiar faces in the paint as juniors A’Kia Harris, Terrianna Cave and Jessica Brown all return along with senior D’Asia Cain on the wing. Those four combined for 26.5 points per game last season, including 11.0 per contest from Brown, who hit 27 three-pointers as a sophomore.

In the backcourt, Aysha Harris returns after averaging 11.8 points per game, and hitting 140 free throws as a sophomore. Harris enters her junior season 15th all-time at UWG in free throws with 180 in her career.

Newcomer Kayla Carter, who sat out last season as a transfer, joins the Wolves at the guard position after a stellar career at Georgia Highlands. The senior averaged 15.9 points per game in the 2015-16 season at GHC, while shooting the ball at a 46.1 percent clip from the field. Carter was named an Honorable Mention All-American that season.

Kilah Nixon also joins the Wolves in the backcourt this season, as she is a junior transfer from Savannah State. Nixon played in 29 games for the Tigers over two seasons in Savannah.

The Wolves will have their hands full this weekend against two solid Sunshine State Conference teams.

Friday’s opponent, Palm Beach Atlantic, is coming off of an 8-18 season last year, and will look to improve off of that as they return Hannah Grim who led the Sailfish in scoring a season ago with 14.7 per game.

Palm Beach Atlantic is coached by Carols Palacio who is 42-87 in five previous seasons at PBA.

On Saturday, the Wolves take on Tampa on the road at the Bob Martinez Athletics Center. Tampa received votes in the WBCA Preseason Poll, and came out sixth in the D2SIDA Preseason South Region Poll.

Karma Jeremie is Tampa’s top returning player as the senior guard averaged 12.1 points and 8.8 rebounds last season. Tom Jessee is in his 16th season at Tampa and is the Spartans’ winningest coach in school history.

The season officially begins on Friday at 12 noon when the Wolves tip off against Palm Beach Atlantic. Saturday’s game gets underway at 6 p.m. in Tampa.
