Carrollton, GA – Last week’s Fifth Annual Westpy Award ceremonies at the University of West Georgia celebrated achievement, on-and-off the field. Beyond athletic accomplishments on the field, two UWG squads were honored as the Academic Teams of the Year.

For the women, the distinction belonged to coach Al Thomas and the UWG Softball team. On the men’s side, coach Todd Selders and the golf team were honored as UWG Men's Academic Team of the Year.

The numbers provide plentiful support for the honors for both.

The Wolves’ softball program boasted an overall grade point average (GPA) of 3.33 for the 2017-18 academic year. This includes seven student-athletes with GPA’s of 3.75, or above. Heading the list is a trio of 4.0 students: Katie FooteAshley Ellison, and Allie Parkerson. Also scoring high were Peyton Stallworth and Beatriz Cardoza at 3.9, Danielle Easterly had a 3.81 GPA, while Lindsye Jefferson secured a 3.76.

UWG’s men’s golf program produced a team GPA of 3.18. Coach Todd Selders’ team came into the 2017-18 athletic year led by three players who were returning members of the Gulf South Conference Academic Honor. Veteran Carson Vaughan captured the Westpy as the program’s academic award winner. Also, veterans Sam Jones and Daniel Benson have captured GSC academic awards during their careers at West Georgia.
