Veteran mentor Scott Groninger returns to the UWG sidelines for the new season. Groninger is now in his eighth campaign as the Wolves’ head coach, and is looking for bigger and better success 2017-18.

Though there were a few bumps a year ago, UWG posted a winning a record at 15-13. That was powered by an early February hot streak of six wins in seven games. That helped propel the Wolves to a fourth place finish in the league standings, and a home court berth for Super Tuesday in the GSC Tournament.

Hosting North Alabama for the second time in three seasons, UWG prevailed over the Lions. The Wolves’ 60-57 win provided one of the most exciting finishes in the Coliseum’s nine seasons as UWG’s home court.

Known as a top in-game tactician, Groninger’s teams have a habit of playing their best against the toughest of competition. That’s a trend the UWG coach hopes will continue in 2017-18.

Groninger came to West Georgia following a successful stint at GSC rival Christian Brothers. Prior to his service at Christian Brothers, he captured league coach of the year honors in leading Chowan (N.C.) to a conference title in 2004. Also, he previously served as an assistant at a pair of Division I programs: Kentucky and Chicago State.

Groninger is a graduate of William Jewell (Mo.) College, where he earned a bachelor’s degree in Business Administration. He also holds a Master of Health Science from Georgia Southern University. He and his wife Kelly are parents of three daughters: Megan, Kristen and Mary-Kate.
