CARROLLTON, Ga. – The West Georgia track and field team has completed their indoor competitions to preface the official start to the outdoor season, and they will kick the season off in Columbus, Georgia at the 5th Annual Cougar Invite on Saturday. This meet is the Wolves' traditional start to the season to get back into the groove of outdoor competition.

This will be the Wolves third season in the Gulf South Conference for track and field, where they won the league in 2016. Outdoor season is more involved for the Wolves with the conference championship is on the line, and with that comes added pressure. The athletes also are striving to qualify for the Division II Outdoor National Championship.

Last season, the Wolves finished fourth overall in the Conference Championship and Amina Saunders was close to the qualifying time in the 400m hurdles, but fell just short.

With many new faces this season, including head coach, Ryan Bailey, the Wolves have been rigorously preparing for this season. The Wolves got two tune-ups at indoor meets in January, and had success at those meets as individuals, breaking records and placing among competitive teams.

“We are looking forward to our first outdoor competition of 2018." said assistant coach Tony Hawkins. "With numerous returners from last season including 12 seniors and the addition of a phenomenal freshmen class we are expecting a well balanced attack this year,” Hawkins added.

The 5th Annual Cougar Invite will begin the road to the Conference Championship where the athletes can get marks and times in the books. As the first outdoor meet of the season, the Wolves will not be competing against any conference teams but will have familiar competition from years past.

Only eight school records were broken last year for the outdoor season with many of those record holders still competing. The Wolves are looking to take back the GSC Championship title this year, as they have been prepping all year.
