GAFFNEY, SC - Chauncey Williams had a night for the ages and head coach David Dean won his 100th game on Saturday evening at The Reservation Stadium in Gaffney, SC as the West Georgia Wolves scored 10 second half points to take a 24-14 victory.
The win moves West Georgia to 2-0 on the year. The Wolves rushes for more than 300 yards on the night, powered by Williams, who had 218 yards rushing and two touchdowns.
Limestone struck first, going up a touchdown early in the second quarter after the two teams played to a scoreless opening period. The Saints got on the board on a one yard rush from Jerko’ya Patton with 14:27 left in the opening half.
Redshirt freshman MJ Latimer then got a big play on defense, picking off DJ Phillips and setting up UWG for a five-play, 39-yard scoring drive that ended with Chauncey Williams taking it into the endzone from four yards out to tie the game at 7-7.
Williams added another score to give UWG a halftime lead, showing off his speed for a 92-yard touchdown run.
The first score of the third quarter came as senior signal caller Willie Candler took it around the left side for his second rushing touchdown of the season, making it 21-7 with 5:27 left in the third.
Three minutes later, the Saints had answered with a 73-yard drive that took seven plays and ended with a one-yard touchdown rush once again by Limestone’s Jerko’ya Patton, cutting the West Georgia advantage back to one possession.
Omar Cervantes put it back to a two possession game with a 28-yard field goal with less than two minutes to go, and Korie Rogers officially sealed the win with an interception on Limestone’s ensuing possession.
The Wolves open at home next week, playing Albany State at 7 pm for the first home game of the 2019 season.
