CARROLLTON, Ga. – The Albany State Golden Rams spoiled Saturday night’s home opener for the UWG football team as the Wolves fell 26-14 at home on Ra-Lin Field.

West Georgia struggled getting the running attack going in the game as the Golden Rams held UWG to 50 yards on 21 rushes, but the Wolves did amass 308 yards through the air. On the other side, Albany State’s rushing attack was potent, going for 253 yards on 49 carries.

After punting on their first drive of the game, quarterback Willie Candler completed a 48-yard pass to John Hurst which he carried to the two-yard line. Just two short plays later Chauncey Williams finished off the 61-yard drive as he punched it in the endzone for a Wolves touchdown.

Albany State answered back on the next drive as Kelias Williams completed a 20-yard touchdown pass to Michael Green to start the second quarter.

With 10:00 minutes left in the second quarter the Wolves kept their drive alive when Tyler Queen took the snap and ran for a first down on a successful fake punt, but the drive would not result in points as a 35-yard field goal attempt was no good.

Albany State took the lead late in the second quarter as Gabriel Ballinas converted a field goal attempt from 44 yards out, making it 10-7 at the half.

The Rams struck first in the second half as Gabriel Ballinas converted a 40-yard field goal to finish off a 10 play 53-yard drive. After a three and out by the Wolves, Albany State’s Gabriel Ballinas finished off another drive with a 46-yard field goal, pushing the lead to 16-7 Albany State.

The Rams scored one more time to finish off the third quarter, this time by way of a one-yard rush by Ram’s running back McKinley Habersham which brought the score to 23-7 going into the fourth quarter.

With 9:35 remaining in the fourth quarter Albany State added three more to their lead after Ballinas drove home his fourth field goal of the game, making the score 26-7 Rams.

The Wolves marched down the field 94 yards and scored late in the fourth when Willie Candler completed a pass to Tay Huff for a four-yard touchdown to account for the final margin.

West Georgia is back to the road next week, making the trek to Melbourne, Florida for a matchup with Florida Tech set to kickoff at 7 p.m.
