CARROLLTON, Ga. – For the third straight weekend, the West Georgia Wolves soccer team takes to the road, but this time the stakes are a little higher as the Wolves open Gulf South Conference play against Montevallo on Friday and then Auburn-Montgomery on Sunday.
Thus far in 2018, the Wolves have been road warriors playing four games all away from the friendly confines of University Field. UWG enters the weekend with an 0-2-2 record after earning a draw against Clayton State before falling to Georgia College last weekend.
Jackie Donaldson has been outstanding through four games, allowing just three goals and making 31 saves. The sophomore from Woodstock made a career high 16 saves against Georgia College on Sunday, and was named the GSC Defender of the Week on Tuesday.
“We always know what to expect out of Jackie,” said head coach Stacey Balaam, “She’s pretty reliable, she works hard, and is very competitive. We’ve put a lot of pressure on her and our back line by not scoring more goals, and she has done a good job for us.”
Katie Mitchell scored the first goal of the season last Friday night against Clayton State, netting her 13th career goal and moving into sixth all-time in career goals at West Georgia.
Now Donaldson, Mitchell, and company will look to get in the win column as GSC play begins Friday at Montevallo. The Falcons are 1-1-2 on the season, and had similar results against Clayton State and Georgia College last week, earning a draw and taking a loss.
“Montevallo kind of mirrored our results in Milledgeville, so it’s probably going to be a little even between the two of,” said Stacey Balaam. “It might be one of those games that comes down to how the ball bounces, and hopefully we can get through the game and attack more and score more goals.”
The on Sunday, the Wolves head south to take on Auburn-Montgomery, who enters the weekend 0-2, but takes on Valdosta State at home on Friday night. In their two games this season, the Warhawks have scored a combined six goals despite coming up short both times.
Kickoff for Friday night in set for 8 p.m. Eastern time from Georgine Lemak Soccer Field in Montevallo, Alabama. Sunday’s game is slated for a 2 p.m. kickoff in Montgomery.
