CARROLLTON, Ga. – A battle of in-state foes is on the horizon as the 1-0 UWG soccer team welcomes the North Georgia Nighthawks to University Field for the 2019 home opener on Saturday. The Wolves and Nighthawks are set to kickoff at 2 p.m.

Both West Georgia and North Georgia began their seasons with wins on Thursday. The Wolves used a pair of second half goals to come back over Young Harris, beginning the year with a 2-1 road win while North Georgia scored three second half goals to take down Limestone 4-1 at home.

For the Wolves, junior defender Tyler Buford leads in points with one goal and one assist while Karley Baker has the other UWG goal on the season, netting the game winner in yesterday’s win.

North Georgia’s early season offensive leader is forward Taylor Malasek who scored half of UNG’s goals on Thursday.

It’s the third meeting in as many years between the two schools, with North Georgia winning each of the last two. All-time, UNG has won six of the seven previous meetings with the two teams playing to a scoreless draw in 2008 in Dahlonega.

UWG head coach Stacey Balaam knows the Nighthawks all too well as she spent six years as an assistant coach at North Georgia.

Balaam and the Wolves look to remain unbeaten and begin that quest at 2 p.m. tomorrow from University Field.
