CARROLLTON, Ga. – For the second straight weekend, the UWG softball team swept a Gulf South Conference doubleheader as UWG powered past Christian Brothers by finals of 12-2 and 10-4 on Saturday afternoon in Memphis, Tennessee.
The pair of wins moves the Wolves to 12-5 on the season and 5-3 in Gulf South Conference play, and makes it four straight wins for West Georgia.
West Georgia slugged out 12 hits on the day for the 12 runs with Lexie Stohr and Sierra Stella accounting for four hits and nine of West Georgia's 12 runs in game one. The pitching duo of Lexi Close and Danielle Easterly held the Bucs to just two runs on five hits in the game.
Ashley Ellison scored the first run of the game in the opening inning as her one-out triple set the stage for a Lexie Stohr RBI single to put the Wolves up 1-0.
In the second inning, the Wolves got a pair of runs on a two-RBI single from Sierra Stella and then loaded the bases for Stohr, who once again delivered, hitting her second homer of the season, a grand slam, to make it a 7-0 UWG lead after two innings.
Christian Brothers broke through and got on the board with two runs in the fourth, but West Georgia responded with five more in the next half inning.
In the fifth, Sydney Smith got an RBI to start the scoring, followed by a two-run homer by Mallory Walker. Stella then drove in another pair while Stohr notched her sixth RBI of the contest to make it a 10-run lead for the Wolves, who retired the Bucs in the bottom half rather uneventfully to end the game after five innings.
Stohr led the Wolves offensively with two hits and six RBI, while Sierra Stella also had two hits with four RBI. Mallory Walker and Alley Taylor also had multi-hit games in the series opener.
Just like in game one, Ashley Ellison got on base with a first inning double and then came in to score on a Sydney Smith single. The early 1-0 lead didn’t last long as the Bucs would tie things up with a first-inning run of their own.
An Alley Taylor single in the second, and RBI from Lexi Close and Peyton Stallworth in the third made it a 4-1 game after two and a half, but the Bucs battled right back with a pair of runs in their half of the third, to make it 4-3.
UWG got two more in the fourth as Ashley Ellison drove in two with a single to right center. CBU would respond with what would be their final run of the game in the fourth, making it 6-4.
UWG added three in the sixth on RBI from Close, Stallworth, and Mallory Walker, and added a final run in the seventh on another Sydney Smith single.
Danielle Easterly, who also pitched in relief in game one, thre four innings of shutout softball and allowed just two hits.
Ellison finished 5-for-5 in game two with a pair of RBI. Alley Taylor had three hits to finish with five on the day. Sydney Smith and Lexi Close also had two hits in the second game of the doubleheader.
