CARROLLTON, Ga. – Another early season tournament awaits the West Georgia Wolves softball team as Al Thomas and his 2019 squad heads to Clearwater, Florida for the NFCA Leadoff Classic where the Wolves will once again play five games in three days.

Last Time Out
In last weekend’s season opening tournament, the Wolves had a strong start at the Gulf Shores Tournament, where they went 4-1, only falling to Lander in extra innings in game three of the weekend. The Wolves earned wins over Tuskegee, Mobile, Spring Hill, and knocked off the fifth-ranked Saint Leo Lions in 10 innings.
Slappey’s Sophomore Start
Madison Slappey got off to a blazing hot start last weekend, leading the team offensively. Slappey earned a batting average of .563, with a league-high nine hits over the weekend. The sophomore from Warner Robins scored 5 runs total for the Wolves, tying her for the team lead.
After missing the majority of last season, the 2017 Gulf South Conference Freshman of the Year returned to the diamond last weekend and posted an 8-for-15 weekend, good for the team’s second-highest average of .533. Smith is one of three Wolves currently tied for the top spot in RBI with four. In the field, Smith played four of the five games at the hot corner, playing error-free softball with five putouts.
Jefferson Carries the Wolves
Junior Lindsye Jeffereson took control of the circle for the Wolves, gaining two wins and a save while making appearances in four of the Wolves’ five games. The Tuscaloosa, Alabama native allowed 3 earned runs in 12.1 innings of play, leaving her with a 1.70 ERA. Jefferson showed good control as well, walking just one batter in the 12-plus innings she pitched.
The NFCA Leadoff Classic features some of the top teams in all of NCAA Division II. The Wolves will face two ranked teams over the weekend in second-ranked Southern Arkansas and number 18 Palm Beach Atlantic. The five teams set to face the Wolves this weekend went a combined 195-81 in 2018. Southern Arkansas started their 2019 season 3-0 last weekend, outscoring teams 18-0 over the three games.
