CARROLLTON, Ga. – A returner for Al Thomas and the UWG softball team was named Preseason All-Gulf South Conference on Wednesday as Raven Smith is the lone UWG player on the list of 15 preseason honorees.


Smith led the team in hitting a season ago, batting .371 in her first season of collegiate softball on her way to being named GSC Freshman of the year. The Covington native also had nine doubles, a triple and six home runs and led the Wolves with 40 RBI. Smith led the team in on-base percentage as well at .459 and stole 16 bases, ranking second on the team.


This season, Smith returns to the corner of the Wolves’ diamond in hopes of improving on last season’s 29-24 record. Smith will play alongside junior college transfer Madison Chambers and incoming freshman Alley Taylor who were named as Coach Thomas’ top newcomers for the 2018 season.


West Georgia was picked eighth in the Preseason Coaches’ Poll. West Florida was picked to win the league with 10 first place votes.


The Wolves have their first action of the spring season coming up this weekend as they host Gordon State in an exhibition double header on Saturday at 1 p.m. The season officially begins on February 2 as West Georgia takes on Eckerd and Miles in day one of the Gulf Coast Invitational in Gulf Shores, Ala.
