CARROLLTON, Ga. – The UWG Softball season is upon us as the Wolves are set for the Gulf Coast Invitational in Gulf Shores, Ala. as West Georgia is set to play five games in three days. With that being said, uwgsports.com brings you a preview of the infield.

Headlining the Wolves’ infield this season is Raven Smith and Sierra Stella. Smith, the reigning Gulf South Conference Freshman of the Year is back after leading the team with a .371 average a season ago while playing third base. The Covington native also hit six homers and led the team with 40 RBI. Stella, UWG’s second basemen is coming off of an All-Region season as a sophomore, hitting .350 with 47 runs scored and a team-high 26 stolen bases.

At shortstop and first base, the Wolves have a pair of true freshmen in Alley Taylor and Lexi Close. Taylor is from Coral Springs, Florida while Close comes to Carrollton from Hillsboro, Missouri.

The Wolves also have a host of capable backups providing depth around the diamond. Lexie Stohr played first base for the majority of the season, but is expected to see time as the designated player this season, as well as providing depth at first base. Stohr hit .329 with three homers last season.

Madison Chambers also looks to be an offensive threat in the designated player spot and also provides depth at first base. Chambers came to UWG from Shelton State where she was a First Team All-Region Selection.

Additionally, West Georgia has freshmen Ashley Ellison, Brooke Parker, and Cassie Henderson set to provide depth on the corners and in the middle infield.

West Georgia is set to take on Eckerd and Miles on Friday to open the season and then will face Nova Southeastern and Young Harris on Saturday before wrapping up the weekend against Barry on Sunday.
