CARROLLTON, Ga. – Following last weekend’s sweep, UWG softball’s Lexi Close was named Gulf South Conference Player of the Week as announced on Tuesday.

Close, a sophomore from Hillsboro, Missouri, went 6-for-11 in four games last week, good for a .545 average, while slugging 1.273 percent with a triple and a pair of home runs while driving in four.. Against Young Harris on Wednesday, close got the start at first base in game two and was 1-for-3 with a solo shot.

Over the weekend, Close was pivotal in UWG’s sweep over Union. She had a hit in each game including two in games one and three. In the finale, her fifth-inning solo shot proved to be the difference in a 3-2 win.

For the year, Close is hitting over .300, with 12 hits in just 36 at bats. She’s now tied for second in home runs with three.

While it’s the first time this season, she has done so, it’s not the first time in her career that Close has hauled in weekly conference honors. Last season, Close was named Freshman and Pitcher of the Week in the second weekend of her freshman campaign.

Close and the Wolves wrap up the regular season this weekend, taking on Valdosta State in a three-game GSC series on Saturday and Sunday.
