CARROLLTON, Ga. – The final weekend of the regular season is here for UWG softball, and the Wolves are headed South down I-75 for a three-game Gulf South Conference series with rival Valdosta State in Valdosta.
West Georgia, fresh off of last weekend’s sweep sit at 26-25 overall with a 12-15 record in Gulf South Conference play. Valdosta State has won seven straight games and sits at 32-12 overall and is 13-10 in GSC play.
It’s been three straight series wins for West Georgia, dating back to the series win over Lee, but UWG’s last series was a sweep over Union at home. The Wolves won game one 8-2 before taking a pair of close, one-run games in the final two, winning 5-4 and 3-2.
A ticket to the Gulf South Conference Tournament is on the line for UWG this weekend. Five teams have already clinched seeds in the tournament, meaning three spots are up for grabs. With a sweep, UWG could potentially move all the way up to the fifth seed depending on other scores around the league. Five teams have a mathematical possibility to clinch one of the final three spots.
Close Recognized by the GSC
After batting .545 last week with a pair of homers and a triple, sophomore Lexi Close was named GSC Player of the Week on Tuesday. It was the first time this season a UWG Player had been named the league’s Player of the Week.
